The Reston-Herndon Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will begin its 7th mentoring season for elementary school girls starting in late September. The organization is looking for volunteers to fill the role. Volunteers work one-on- one with students for 90 minutes each Tuesday after school hours at a Reston school. Reston Multicultural Festival seeks volunteers for Saturday, Sept. 6, at Lake Anne Plaza, Reston. Volunteer hours are 10:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Must be 13 or older to volunteer, younger must be accompanied by an adult. Advocates needed to reinforce rights. Volunteer advocates are assigned to a specific local nursing home or assisted-living facility in Fairfax County and make weekly visits, meeting one-on-one with residents. Using the skills of listening, observing and mediating, the ombudsman works with the residents, their families and the staff of the facility, to ensure that the residents’ rights are being protected. Applicants must be available to volunteer four hours per week, primarily during regular business hours. Also, volunteer ombudsmen must not be employed by a long-term care facility. Interviews of applicants will be held this summer in preparation for the next annual training, scheduled for Sept. 15, 16, and 26, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Join the Reston Association Weed Warriors Project on the fourth Saturday of every month to help protect our forests and restore them to their natural state. On Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., the group will meet at the Lake Anne Garden Plots parking lot off of Wiehle Ave. Long pants and long sleeves are recommended. HAVEN of Northern Virginia, a nonsectarian, nonprofit, all-volunteer organization, needs volunteers to provide emotional support to the bereaved, the seriously ill, the dying and their families and friends.

Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 2-1/2 hours of weekday telephone duty on for at least one year and attend a 30-hour training course, which will begin Sept. 29 and run through Oct. 10. Meals on Wheels volunteers are needed to pick up meals from local school or hospital providers and delivering them to local residents. Meal delivery occurs midday Monday – Friday and takes about 1.5 – 2.0 hours to deliver the meals. Volunteer drivers can deliver on a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or substitute basis. Help clean Reston’s local stream valley on Saturday, Oct. 18, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Different groups will clean the entire stream, starting at Hunters Woods Village Center, Glade Bank Way, Soapstone Drive, Walker Nature Education Center and Tall Oaks Village Center along Colvin Run. Become a volunteer stream monitor and help RA assess the health of our stream at a Stream Monitoring Workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 7:30 p.m., at the Reston Association, 1930 Isaac Newton Square.
