Traffic Changes In Alexandria

Beginning last night, chnages began in the traffic patterns in Alexandria where Route 1 crosses the Capital Beltway, according to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project. They are as follows:

As of Wednesday night, July 26, ramps from Route 1 South to I-95/Capital Beltway will switch back to their original orientation.

Drivers traveling from Route 1 South to I-95 North/Beltway Outer Loop toward Maryland should take the center lane of Route 1 and the left side of the ramp.

Drivers traveling from Route 1 South to I-95 South/Beltway Inner Loop, toward Springfield, should take the right lane of Route 1 and the right side of the ramp.

These switches are necessary due to the opening of the new ramp from Route 1 South to I-95 South/Beltway Inner Loop, according to Project personnel. Roadway message signs are posted along southbound Route 1 to alert motorists to the changes.

Motorists should expect construction in this area over the next several weeks as this new traffic pattern is completed, according to project information.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, July 27, 28 and 29, closures will continue on I-95 South/Beltway Inner Loop, immediately West of the Wilson Bridge.

Later this week multiple lanes of the Inner Loop from the bridge to beyond the Route 1 interchange will be closed periodically during overnight hours to lift steel beams across the Beltway. During those closures, Inner Loop traffic will be completely stopped for intermittent periods of up to 40 minutes between midnight and 5 a.m. Closure schedules are: Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Friday, 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., if necessary; and Saturday, 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., if necessary.

To avoid delays, southbound long-distance travelers are urged to consider using I-495 West (Outer Loop) west and north of Washington, D.C., crossing the American Legion Bridge. Southbound travelers may also use U.S. Route 301.

Early August: Right-turn ramp from Route 1 North to I-95 South/Beltway Inner Loop to close. A new temporary ramp is scheduled to open with traffic signals.
