Robert E. Lee High School will be celebrating 45 years of serving the community this fall. To commemorate the event, the Lee Alumni and Friends Association (LAFA) is hosting an anniversary celebration Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Greenspring Village Conference Center in Springfield. All Lee High School alumni, faculty, staff and friends are invited to attend the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. and requires the pre-purchase of a $75 ticket.

The evening will include light hors d’oeuvres, dancing and fund-raising to help the Lee Alumni and Friends Association’s mission of supporting the Lee High School community with scholarships to students, grants to school clubs and programs, books for the library and other worthy programs.

In addition to the 45th anniversary celebration, a home football game has been designated “Alumni Appreciation Night” at Lee High School on Friday, Nov. 7. A free guided tour of the newly renovated Lee High School will be given on Saturday, Nov. 8, beginning inside the school’s front entrance promptly at 1 p.m.

Need the help of a reliable teenager? West Springfield High School maintains a job and volunteer opportunity board. Students come to the Career Center at school to obtain information about part-time jobs and volunteer needs. From babysitting to yard work to word processing, there is a student to help. Newington Forest Elementary School alumni are asked to contact the school to help with the "Where are they now?" section of the alumni book to be distributed at the school's 20th anniversary celebration on Nov. 16, 2-4 p.m., at the school. Alumni are asked to share their best memories, both of Newington Forest and since graduating, and give some information about their current lives. Students at Little Run Elementary are celebrating Veterans Day for a whole week. Students will begin to make decorations and write poems and letters to military veterans beginning Wednesday, Nov. 5. Students and staff members will make a chain around the school in honor of family members who have served in the military. A representative of the military will visit the school, and a display of military honors will be placed in the school showcase.

The following Hayfield Secondary students were nominated to the 2003-04 Homecoming Court: ninth grade - Danielle Duckett, Paloma Duran, Robert DeSano and Danny Small; 10th grade - Drew Hill, Jordan Alexander, Joshua Pruitt, Allie Crocker, Bethany Clifton and Brittany Marshall; 11th grade - Laura Benoit, Lauren Limerick, Huy Chu and Patrick Mandeville; and 12th grade - Ashley Rock, Christine Villanueva, Jessi Craven, Jessica Sajbel, Jillan Yoerges, Savannah Fetterof, Virginia Orellana, Alfredo Morales, Carlo Sandiego, Joe Anderson, Stephan Humphries, Tristan Vincent, Tyler Moore and Will Murphy. Murphy and Villanueva were chosen as the Homecoming King and Queen.

Hayfield Secondary Cosmetology II students recently participated in a statewide competition at the Virginia State Fair where senior Digna Rojas placed second.

At the Oakton Classic, the Hayfield Secondary Color Guard won first place, the marching band placed third overall and the drum majors won their class title.

The Hayfield Secondary Marching Band and the Color Guard also won a superior rating at the Massaponax High School Competition.

Ashley Boney of Hayfield Secondary took fifth place in the Junior Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate which qualifies her for the Metrofinal Championships in March.

The Hayfield Secondary Chess Team won first place at the Metro League Opening Tournament, beating, among others, defending state champion Thomas Jefferson. Amitt Dutta led the way with a 4-0 record, which Stephen Quinn finished with a 3-0-1 record.
